Once Human Reverse Engineering Guide
Tech Points, Formula unlocking, and the Research Workbench — the progression layer most players discover too late.
Reverse Engineering arrived with the Version 2.2.2 Tech System overhaul in early 2026, replacing or supplementing the older Memetics node system. It lets you take equipment and facilities from the open world, bring them back to your territory, and research them to unlock Tech Formulas or earn Tech Points. This page covers how the system works, where to find research items, and how to spend Tech Points efficiently.
What Reverse Engineering replaces
Before the 2.2.2 overhaul, progression was primarily through Memetic trees and scenario rewards. The new Tech system adds a second layer: finding real objects in the world, reverse-engineering them, and unlocking permanent crafting formulas. This is especially valuable for players who want to craft high-tier equipment without relying solely on the Wish Machine or seasonal drops.
Key distinction: Lost gear and gear transferred from Eternaland cannot be reverse-engineered or repaired, but can be traded and used.
How Tech Points work
Tech Points are the currency of the Reverse Engineering system. They are earned by:
- Reverse Engineering items at the Tech Research Workbench — each item yields points on first research
- Completing Scenario Challenges (Phase Rewards) — each scenario has milestone rewards that include Tech Points
- Capturing each Deviation species for the first time each season — Starry Studio confirmed this stacks across a season reset
Tech Points accumulate in your account and can be spent across the Tech tree categories.
Tech Categories (Trees)
The Tech system is organized into categories, each containing multiple Formulas:
- Weapons — crafting recipes for high-tier weapons not available through standard crafting
- Armor — equipment formulas including rare mod sockets and material combinations
- Facilities — base structures, automation components, and power systems
- Consumables — combat items, food recipes, and utility tools
- Deviation Tech — specialized formulas related to Deviant capture and work mode optimization
The Tech Research Workbench
The Tech Research Workbench is your primary tool. It has two modes:
Reverse Engineering Mode
Place items you have collected from the world into the bench to break them down and earn Tech Points. Each item type yields a different amount of points. Higher-tier items yield more points but cost more to obtain.
Tech Invention Mode
Once you have accumulated enough Tech Points and unlocked specific branches, you can experiment with different resource combinations to discover new Recipes. This is how you unlock Formulas not available through standard progression.
Best items to reverse engineer
For maximum efficiency, research items that:
- You have duplicates of (never research your only copy of a critical item)
- Are high-tier equipment you found in Red Sands or nightmare silos
- Have no resale value but contain rare materials
The GNL Magazine Reverse Engineering Database is a community resource listing every item that can be reverse engineered, where to find them, and which can also be unlocked via Tech Invention. Bookmark it from the links page.
Farming Tech Points efficiently
Early game: Focus on Scenario Challenge completion. Each scenario has Phase Rewards that include Tech Points — these are essentially free and do not require sacrificing usable gear.
Mid game: Start reverse engineering duplicate weapons and armor you find in silos. Keep one copy of anything you actually use; research the extras.
Late game: The highest point yields come from reverse engineering pinnacle-tier equipment. These are rare drops, so do not waste them on research until you have a comfortable stockpile.
Tech Points and the 2026 seasonal reset
Unlike Starchrom and blueprint progress, Tech Points are seasonal. They reset with each new scenario season. Formulas you have unlocked through Tech Invention remain unlocked — only the point currency resets.
This means the optimal strategy is to spend all Tech Points before a seasonal reset, prioritizing:
- High-cost Formulas you will actually use next season
- Universal utilities like facility upgrades and consumables
- Deviation Tech if you are still building your Securement roster
How Tech Invention works
Tech Invention is the experimental crafting mode at the Research Workbench. Instead of following a fixed recipe, you drop different combinations of materials into the bench and see what happens. Successful experiments unlock new Formulas.
- Each experiment costs materials and Tech Points
- Success rates improve as you unlock related Formulas in the same tree
- Failed experiments still yield small amounts of Tech Points back
- Some rare Formulas only unlock through specific material combinations
The Version 2.2.2 Dev Blog had a full table of available Tech Invention recipes. Check the updates page for the current state of the Invention tree.
Relationship with Memetics
The Tech system runs parallel to Memetics, not as a replacement. Memetic points still unlock benches, structures, and basic quality-of-life features. Tech Formulas add crafting recipes for items that would otherwise require Wish Machine luck or seasonal drops.
A complete progression strategy uses both: Memetics for base infrastructure, Tech for crafting flexibility.
FAQ
Can I reverse engineer gear from Eternaland? No. Lost gear and gear transferred from Eternaland cannot be reverse engineered or repaired. They can be traded or used directly, but not researched.
Do Tech Points reset each season? Yes. Tech Points are seasonal currency. Formulas you have unlocked through Invention stay unlocked, but unspent Points reset with each new season.
What is the fastest way to earn Tech Points? Complete Scenario Challenge Phase Rewards — these are the highest guaranteed Point yields without sacrificing usable gear.
Can I trade items before reverse engineering them? Yes. Items can be traded before being placed in the Research Workbench. Only the act of research is irreversible.
What is the difference between Reverse Engineering and Tech Invention? Reverse Engineering breaks down items to earn Tech Points. Tech Invention uses Points to experiment with material combinations and unlock new Formulas. Both happen at the Tech Research Workbench.
