Once Human Way of Winter Guide

Temperature is a fifth meter. Dress for it or the snow buries a full hunger bar.

Way of Winter

Way of Winter is Once Human wearing a different knife. The guns, Deviants, and Wish Machine still work. The deaths are weather. This page is the first-week kit for the snowy-realm scenario: where to spawn, how Thermal Towers work, and why a Manibus t-shirt is a wipe. If you have never played, start on Manibus instead — winter is a second character, not a tutorial.

The scenario sits on the northern snow map (Vena Fjord, Onyx Tundra, Ember Strand). Extreme cold and, later, extreme heat are independent of hunger. Survival still applies; temperature is extra.

Pick a spawn like it matters

Onyx Tundra is the gentler start: more raidable buildings, slower push into high-level snow. Vena Fjord is closer to later zones and a better “I already know Manibus” home. You are not locked forever, but relocating a Territory Core in a blizzard is how seasons evaporate.

Do not drop Way of Winter as character one because the trailer looked pretty. Console week-one Metas in particular should read getting started on Manibus first.

Temperature, gear, and Thermal Towers

Hypothermia is a timer, not a vibe. Craft cold-resist top and bottom as soon as you have hides. Polar bears in the starter pocket are a classic first farm: torch or crossbow, they do not fight back in the beginner loop, and the skins become +cold pieces. A torch also adds a small heat bubble while you work.

Thermal Towers are the public heat/cold infrastructure. Hives share them. Solo players still want one in range of the core. Phase 4 (later in the season) turns the weather mean — heat and cold snap on a schedule. If you skip the tower, you skip the season.

Furnaces, insulated walls, and scenario clothes stack. Do not dump Memetics into fairy lights until you have a heat source and a fridge. Food still spoils; winter does not pause Sanity.

First-day loop

  1. Spawn, grab the tutorial crafts, get a torch and a ranged weapon.
  2. Hunt the nearby safe wildlife for hides. Craft resist gear before you sightseeing.
  3. Plant the core on water + ore, same rules as Manibus, plus a Thermal Tower plan.
  4. Bike / motorcycle as soon as the journey allows. Walking frostbite is not content.
  5. House Digby Boy and Festering Gel. Winter does not replace pets.
  6. Follow journey objectives until the vehicle and the tower are online.

Hot Rock and Cold Crystal ores are winter-specific nodes. They feed scenario crafts you cannot skip. Mark them on the map the first time you trip over one.

Combat is still a tag

Shrapnel and Bounce still clear winter silos (Taurus and friends). Temperature deaths feel like “the gun is weak.” Usually the gun is fine and your coat is not. Star the same build you would on Manibus, then socket resist. Melee in a blizzard is a montage, not a plan.

Sign-up timing

You typically sign up for Way of Winter at the end of your current scenario (Settlement phase), or you create a fresh character into a winter server. New-player winter servers exist; they are still winter. If a friend invites you, confirm it is not a PvP warband wearing snow cosmetics.

When Isles of Abyss arrives in October 2026, ocean weather will be a cousin of this page, not a copy. Learn Thermal Towers now if you like surviving on purpose.

Dress, tower, then shoot. That order is the guide.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Once Human questions.

Should a new player start in Way of Winter?

No. Manibus first. Winter adds a meter that kills you with a full backpack.

Vena Fjord or Onyx Tundra?

Onyx Tundra if you are new to winter. Vena Fjord if you already have a starred gun and want a later-game home.

Do I need a Thermal Tower solo?

Yes in range of the core. Hives make it easier; they do not make it optional in later phases.

Can I use my Manibus Shrapnel build?

Yes. Add resist gear. The tag does not change because the snow is pretty.
