Once Human Base Building Guide
A Territory Core is a factory with a roof. Build the factory first.
Once Human’s building tools are good enough to waste forty hours on a mansion that cannot smelt ore. This guide is the opposite: a season-proof Territory Core that powers benches, waters crops, houses Deviants, and still looks like a place you want to log into. Use it with the getting started checklist, then steal layout ideas from Eternaland once the machines run.
You may relocate a territory. You should still pick the first spot as if you cannot, because moving costs materials and momentum.
Where to plant the core
Score a location on four things:
- Water. Pumps and boilers want a source within pipe range. Hauling bottles forever is not a build.
- Ore and trees. Digby Boy and Logging Beaver need nodes or a short walk. The map guide marks beginner-friendly Dayton Wetlands and Broken Delta pockets.
- Road access. Vehicles exist. A scenic cliff with no ramp is a trap.
- Threat. High-level Deviation patrols will farm you while you are in build camera.
Official PvE Manibus is forgiving. PvP scenarios are not — if you queued Evolution’s Call, hide the core and turret the approach.
The first night kit
Memetic-unlock in this order, not the furniture tab:
- Territory Core and walls enough to stop wildlife.
- Generator or other power source, then cables to the benches you actually use.
- Storage crate, then a Storage Terminal once available (version 3.0.5 added crate search — use it).
- Stove, water collector or pump, bed.
- Isolated Securement Unit for the first Deviant.
- Workbenches for guns, armor, and ammo.
Decorative lamps can wait until Festering Gel and Digby Boy are housed. Power and water failures are the number-one “my base is broken” ticket, and they are almost always a disconnected cable or a dry pump.
Power, water, and automation
Think in loops:
- Power loop. Fuel or Deviant-generated electricity → generator → cables → machines. Electric Eel is the classic early power pet. Leave slack in the cable budget for a second floor.
- Water loop. Source → pump → cistern → boiler / grow plots / taps. Rain Man helps farms. Leaks and unpowered pumps look like “the well ran dry.”
- Farm loop. Growshroom plus a water feed prints the vegetables your survival meals need. Do not hand-water after week one.
- Smelt / mill loop. Flame Essence and similar crafting Deviants sit next to ore boxes, not in the living room.
A compact rectangle with machines on the ground floor and sleeping / crafting on the second beats a sprawling village you cannot defend or pathfind. You can pretty it later with paints and the structure-replacement mode that arrived in 2026 building updates.
Deviant rooms are part of architecture
Isolated Securement Units are furniture with stats. Combat pets come with you; territory pets stay home and print value. Give territory units:
- Power
- The correct work mode (mine, log, cook, guard)
- Mood items if the pet has them
- A path to the resource they are assigned
Nutcracker and other guards belong on the perimeter. Chefosaurus Rex belongs next to the kitchen. Stuffing every pet in one dark closet tanks production. Rankings are on the Deviant tier list.
Eternaland is the sketchbook
Season resets wipe or shrink what you can carry in the scenario. Eternaland is the persistent island where you prototype palaces, store extra materials, and — after later patches — terraform. Build ugly-efficient in the scenario. Build pretty in Eternaland. Terraforming tools live in the Eternaland shop; they are not a substitute for a working Manibus core.
When a season ends, screenshot your machine layout. Recreating the loop is faster than recreating the gables.
Sharing, hive, and permissions
You can share a base with friends. Permissions exist so a helpful hive-mate does not dismantle your generator. Set them before you go to work. Online co-op is the point of a hive core; just do not leave withdraw-all on the default rank.
Turrets, gates, and a clear killbox matter more in PvP builds than in Manibus, but even PvE wildlife will wander in if you leave a two-storey art installation with no door.
Upgrade path
After the first week, add a garage, a Deviation wing, and a dedicated ammo closet. Use structure replacement to batch-upgrade wood to higher tiers instead of demolishing. Utility-management mode (pipes and wires without the clutter) is there for a reason — switch to it when a machine is dark.
If you want a visual tour of a complete 2026 layout, the embedded video walks lighting, plumbing, and auto-farm. Then come back and spend the saved hours on a Shrapnel gun instead of another balcony.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Once Human questions.
Can I move my Territory Core?
Yes. Pack, relocate, rebuild. Still choose water and ore on the first drop so you are not moving every night.
Why are my machines unpowered?
Disconnected cables, an empty generator, or a Deviant power pet that is asleep or unassigned. Use utility-management mode to see wires.
Should I build pretty or practical first?
Practical in the scenario, pretty in Eternaland. Season resets are unkind to cathedrals with no stove.
Which Deviants belong in the base?
Digby Boy, Electric Eel, Logging Beaver, Growshroom, Rain Man, Flame Essence, Chefosaurus Rex. Combat pets travel with you.
