Once Human Survival Guide

Hunger is easy. Sanity is the hidden health bar that ends nightmare pulls.

Survival and Sanity

Once Human’s survival layer looks generous until Stardust gets into your meals. Hunger and thirst are visible. Sanity is the one that silently lowers maximum HP, which is why a Meta with “good gear” still folds in a silo. This guide covers the meters, the pollution rule, winter temperature, and the food buffs that double as DPS. Pair it with the getting started checklist and a Territory Core layout that actually cooks.

The four meters that matter

  • Hunger. Drops slowly. Cooked meat, canned food, and crops from a Growshroom plot keep it stable. Raw polluted meat is not a shortcut; it is a Sanity invoice.
  • Thirst. Faster than hunger, especially in Red Sands. Keep clean water on the hotbar. Boil or filter anything pulled from a contaminated source.
  • Stamina / load. Overweight Metas sprint like they are underwater. Storage Terminals (the 3.0.5 search feature helps here) exist so you stop living out of a backpack.
  • Sanity. The real survival stat. Pollution, corrupted biomes, some Deviation auras, and dirty consumables chip it. When Sanity falls, max HP falls with it. Healing syringes cannot restore a cap you already lost.

Activators — later renamed Treatment in some Manibus strings — are the emergency Sanity restore. Craft them before you farm high-pollution POIs. Festering Gel, covered in the Deviants guide, also returns HP and Sanity in a fight, which is why it stays S-tier on the Deviant tier list.

Pollution is a food-safety problem

Stardust soaked the soil and the rivers. The world still looks lootable: barrels, wildlife, vending machines, abandoned kitchens. Visual “freshness” is a trap. If the item tooltip mentions pollution, contamination, or Stardust, cook it, process it, or trash it. A fridge in the base is not decoration; it is how you stop eating yesterday’s mistake.

Chefosaurus Rex (epic territory cook) and basic stoves both convert dangerous ingredients into clean meals. Until you have the pet, a camp stove plus boiled water is enough. Do not fill every slot with combat snacks until the survival loop is automatic.

Food that is also a build

Endgame silo food is not “anything edible.” Shrapnel and Bounce pages assume you pre-buff:

  • Canned steak or equivalent weapon-damage meals.
  • Stardust mushroom soup and other elemental / deviant drinks when the build calls for them.
  • Clean water so the buffs are not fighting a thirst debuff.

The Shrapnel build and Bounce bow build list the specific plates creators use for nightmare shields. Cook them at the base, not beside the boss, and keep a stack in the Cradle inventory.

Biomes change the rules

Nalcott is not one climate. Dayton Wetlands is tutorial-friendly. Broken Delta and Iron River raise enemy density. Chalk Peak and Red Sands punish thirst and heat. Blackheart and later zones assume you already have filters and a vehicle. The map guide lists where to plant a first core; this page tells you what to pack.

Way of Winter is a different survival game wearing the same gunplay. Temperature is a fifth meter. Cold snaps in Vena Fjord and heat in Ember Strand will kill you with a full hunger bar. Craft insulated clothing, heaters, and the scenario’s climate tools before you sightseeing. If you queued winter as a first character, consider a Manibus reroll — the scenarios guide explains why.

Combat survival is positioning plus pets

Silos, monoliths, and Prime War are DPS checks only after you stop taking chip damage. Bring:

  • A heal Deviant (Festering Gel) or a taunt Deviant (Lonewolf’s Whisper) from the tier list.
  • Armor mods that match the armor rankings instead of random blues.
  • A planned gun from the weapon tier list, not three half-star legendaries.

Sanity still applies inside instances. If a nightmare modifier floods the arena with pollution, drink the cleanser on a timer, not when the HP bar is already a stub.

A practical field kit

Hotbar a melee for crates, a ranged primary, clean water, a cooked meal, Activators, and a repair tool. Keep ammo types for one gun family so you are not carrying four calibers “just in case.” Vehicles and, later, flying crafts exist because Nalcott is large; walking through pollution to save fuel is a false economy.

When the kit is stable, spend the saved deaths on Wish Machine progress and a real build. Survival is the floor. Builds are the ceiling.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Once Human questions.

Why is my max HP lower than my gear suggests?

Sanity. Restore it with clean food, Activators, and by leaving polluted zones. Healing items cannot refill a lowered cap.

Can I ignore hunger on a combat build?

Short term, yes. Long term the debuffs stack with Sanity and you will fail the same silo you already know how to shoot.

Is Way of Winter just colder Manibus?

No. Temperature kills independently of hunger. Bring climate gear or pick Manibus first.

What Deviant helps survival the most?

Festering Gel for fights, Digby Boy for the resource loop that funds food and ammo. Both are covered in the Deviants guide.
