Once Human Deviants Guide
Capture, house, and assign the anomalies that fight, mine, cook, and keep you sane.
Deviants (also called Deviations in older strings) are Once Human’s signature system: Stardust-warped creatures you capture, house in Isolated Securement Units, and either take into combat or leave at the Territory Core as workers. Most new Metas treat them as cute backpack charms. The Metas who clear nightmare silos treat them as loadout slots and a second economy. This page is the how-to; rankings live on the Deviant tier list.
The three jobs
Every Deviant is built for one job, even if the model looks like a mascot:
- Combat. Summoned in the field. Healers, tanks, and damage pets. Festering Gel and Lonewolf’s Whisper are the two names you should know before your first silo.
- Territory. Stay home. Digby Boy mines, Logging Beaver cuts, Growshroom and Rain Man farm, Electric Eel powers, Nutcracker guards, Chefosaurus Rex cooks.
- Crafting / specialty. Smelting, energy recovery, niche production. Flame Essence and Rebecca-style energy pets belong next to benches, not in your Cradle for a boss.
You do not need eighty pets. You need a healer, a miner, a power source, and then whatever the current build calls for.
How to find and capture
World Deviants spawn at set POIs, in silos, during events, and as random world encounters. Some are story-gated; many are not. When you see the capture prompt:
- Lower the target (do not always execute — some captures fail on a corpse).
- Use the capture / secure action when the prompt appears.
- Have an Isolated Securement Unit ready at base or the Deviant sits in a temporary state you will forget.
Silos and nightmare variants drop stronger combat pets. Territory workers are often common on the overworld, which is why Digby Boy is both easy and mandatory. If a location guide video and the in-game map disagree after a season reset, trust the current scenario map — spawns move.
Deviation: SCP (Survive, Capture, Preserve) flips the fantasy: your guns are weaker and pets do the killing. Even then, the housing rules below still apply. Read the scenarios guide before you main that mode.
Isolated Securement is the real inventory
A captured Deviant without power, mood, and an assignment is a stuffed animal. In the unit:
- Connect power.
- Set the work mode (combat standby versus territory task).
- Feed the preferred item if the pet has a diet.
- Keep the unit inside the Territory Core radius.
Combat pets travel with you when assigned to the Cradle. Territory pets should never occupy your only combat slot on a Prime War night. Build extra units as soon as Memetics allow — the base building guide treats a Deviation wing as a required room, not a luxury.
Deviation Fusion (rolling out after the 24 September 2026 update across scenarios) lets you fuse pets with each other or even with animals and furniture for trait remixes. Fusion is for surplus copies, not for your only Festering Gel.
First-week capture priority
- Festering Gel — common combat heal, HP and Sanity. If you only keep one fighter, keep this.
- The Digby Boy — common miner. Deletes the worst grind in the game.
- Electric Eel — base power so you stop feeding generators by hand.
- Flame Essence — smelting while you explore.
- Lonewolf’s Whisper or Polar Jelly — rare combat upgrades when they drop.
- Logging Beaver, Growshroom, Rain Man, Nutcracker — mid-game territory staff.
- Rebecca, Chefosaurus Rex — epic quality-of-life when the season gives you a shot.
Combat-skill Deviants that match a Shrapnel or Bounce page (Butterfly’s Emissary, weak-spot specialists, taunts) come after the floor pets are housed. A 12 million DPS clip with no Gel is still a wipe if you misstep.
Taking pets into silos and Prime War
Slot the combat Deviant before you zone in. Learn the summon key on your controls layout — first-person mode on console still uses the same Cradle slot. Pets have cooldowns and moods; a starving Gel will not save a nightmare shield phase.
Public Prime War is easier with a taunt pet so the boss looks at something that is not your hive’s revive chain. Solo silos prefer heal or damage depending on the weapon. Do not bring a logging beaver into Lea Lab.
Storage and season resets
You cannot keep every cute model. When the securement cap hurts, prefer workers that print Starchrom-adjacent resources (ore, food, fuel) over duplicate combat skins. Eternaland can hold overflow in some seasons; the scenario cap is the one that ruins Monday night.
For spawn routes, watch the embedded location guide, then mark your own map — official POI names shifted with the Manibus terminology pass (Rift Anchor → Worldstone, and so on). After that, spend the time you used to mine by hand on Wish Machine stars.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Once Human questions.
What is the difference between a Deviant and a Deviation?
Same fantasy. Older and newer strings mix the words. If it goes in an Isolated Securement Unit, this guide applies.
Can I play without pets?
You can walk. You will mine by hand, heal with syringes only, and lose time to every Meta who automated the same loop.
Do Deviants work in PvP?
Combat pets still summon. Territory pets still work at home. Prismverse and RaidZone loadouts are on the PvP build page.
Where do I see rankings?
The Deviant tier list. This page is capture and housing; that page is who to keep.
