Once Human Getting Started Guide

The first-night checklist for PC, mobile, and the 2026 console launch — without a wasted scenario.

Getting Started

Once Human throws Memetics, Deviants, Sanity, Wish Machine pity, and a seasonal scenario picker at you before you have a decent gun. This page is the order of operations that actually works in 2026: pick Manibus, claim codes, stand up a tiny automated base, then spend Starchrom on one weapon family. If you want the cinematic trailer version of the pitch, the homepage covers the world. This guide assumes you already clicked Play and need to not brick the first week.

The game is free-to-play on PC (Steam, Epic, Microsoft Store), iOS, Android, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. Cross-play and cross-progression shipped with the 25 August 2026 console launch, so a friend on Steam can run silos with a Meta on PS5. There is no offline mode and no local split-screen — it is online co-op and optional PvP.

1. Choose the right scenario

On the server list, ignore flashy PvP tags until you understand crafting. Manibus is the vanilla PvE ruleset: Nalcott, Prime War world bosses, and the systems every other scenario still uses. Way of Winter will freeze you. Endless Dream is a denser, meaner PvE sandbox. Deviation: SCP wants pet combat. Evolution’s Call and Prismverse’s Clash are PvP. Custom servers are fine if they are tagged new-player-friendly, but official Manibus is the default recommendation. Full comparisons sit in the scenarios guide.

If a friend already plays, join their server with an invite code from their name card. Do not create a second character on a dead world “just to look around” — Eternaland helps, but your time does not.

2. Finish Eve of Evolution, then redeem

The opening questline teaches melee, scavenging, a workbench, and your first bullets. Complete it. Shop Events (F3 on PC) stay locked until those crafts exist. Then open the codes list and follow how to redeem. Console players should also skim the console guide for the Settings → Account path and pre-order pack claims.

Starchrom from codes is permanent progression. Do not open every crate on a grey pistol. Park them until you have read the weapon tier list.

3. Plant a Territory Core that can grow

Your first house is a machine, not a museum. Place the core:

  • Near fresh water and at least one ore node.
  • Off a road that you will actually drive.
  • Away from high-level Deviation patrols if you are still in starter gear.

Unlock a generator, a storage crate, a stove, and an Isolated Securement Unit. Capture The Digby Boy (territory miner) and Festering Gel (combat heal) as soon as they appear. The base building guide and Deviants guide explain why those two pets pay rent for the rest of the season.

Relocating a territory is allowed. Relocating because you built on a cliff with no water is a rite of passage you can skip.

4. Treat Sanity as HP

Stardust pollutes food, water, and air. Eating dirty meals or lingering in corrupted zones drains Sanity, and Sanity drains max HP. Cook, filter, and carry Activators (Treatment). The survival guide is the longer version; the short version is: if your health pool is shrinking between fights, you have a Sanity problem, not a gun problem.

Way of Winter adds temperature on top. If you queued that scenario by accident, craft climate gear before you explore Vena Fjord.

5. Memetics, mods, and one gun family

Memetic (tech) points unlock benches and structures. Reverse-engineer junk, follow the main tasks, and do not dump points into decorative furniture while you still lack a refrigerator and a turret.

Weapons are not “whatever legendary dropped.” Shrapnel (SOCR Last Valor, SN700 Finale) and Bounce (Compound Bow) are the two beginner-to-endgame lines that still clear nightmare silos in 2026. Calibrations and armor mods matter more than the paint job. Pick one line from the builds hub, then spend Wish Machine currency as the Wish Machine guide describes: pity a legendary, buy the same blueprint in the shop, star it.

6. First-week loop

  • Daily: cook, empty Digby Boy, run nearby POIs, turn in tasks.
  • Unlock a vehicle as soon as the Memetic allows. Walking Nalcott is how people quit.
  • Hit Rift Anchors / Worldstones as you pass them; they are map progress, not optional flavour.
  • When you can survive a public event, queue Prime War with a hive or pickup group. Boss loot funds the armor tier list plan.
  • Keep one eye on patch notes so a storage-search or dye patch does not look like a broken crate.

7. What to ignore on purpose

Lightforge gacha cosmetics, Meta Pass time-savers, and PvP warbands can wait. The combat fantasy is strong without a credit card. If you enjoy cosmetics, buy them after your first six-star blueprint, not before.

When the first-week loop feels automatic, graduate to the Deviant tier list and a dedicated Shrapnel or Bounce page. That is the real “getting started” finish line: a heated, powered base, two working pets, and one gun you intend to star.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Once Human questions.

Should I start on a PvP server with friends?

Only if those friends will babysit you. Otherwise Manibus. You can move later; you cannot un-raid a wiped core.

Is Once Human pay-to-win?

Monetization is mostly cosmetics, Battle Pass, and convenience. Builds are calibration and silo knowledge, not a shop SKU.

How long is the tutorial?

The scripted opener is short. The real tutorial is the first Territory Core plus Sanity management, which this page covers.

Can I play solo?

Yes. Online co-op is optional for most PvE. Prime War and some silos are faster in a group but are not hard-gated for a prepared solo Meta.
